Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD), also known as Herpangina, falls under the category of pediatric diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. According to the principles of internal medicine in traditional Chinese medicine, HFMD is often caused by external invasion of wind-heat pathogenic factors, internal retention of damp-heat, and the invasion of the lung and spleen meridians. The main clinical manifestations include fever, the appearance of vesicles on the palms, soles, and buttocks, and oral ulceration.

In the clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, the core pathogenesis of HFMD involves the confrontation between external wind-heat pathogenic factors and internal retention of damp-heat, which invades the lung and spleen meridians. Common precipitating factors include irregular diet, changeable weather, and a damp living environment. During the differential diagnosis, it is essential to differentiate between the syndrome of invasion of the lung and spleen by pathogenic factors and the syndrome of excessive damp-heat. The syndrome of invasion of the lung and spleen by pathogenic factors is characterized by fever, cough with runny nose, vesicles on the palms, soles, and buttocks. The syndrome of excessive damp-heat is manifested by high fever, dense vesicles, and oral ulceration. In treatment, traditional Chinese medicine often adopts methods such as clearing heat and detoxifying, transforming dampness and promoting eruption, or clearing heat and cooling the nutrient, detoxifying and removing dampness, for regulation. The overall direction of regulation suggests that attention should be paid to clearing heat and detoxifying, harmonizing the spleen and stomach, to eliminate the cause and alleviate symptoms.

Common Syndrome Types and Key Points of Differentiation

Management Approach:清热凉营,解毒祛湿

The above syndrome information is based on traditional Chinese medicine textbooks and clinical standards. Specific differentiation should be completed by a practicing traditional Chinese medicine physician in person.

Physician's Clinical Insights

In clinical practice, the characteristics of vesicles in HFMD patients vary. Differentiating between pathogenic heat and damp-heat is crucial for precise medication.
