Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition
In traditional Chinese medicine, Bell's Palsy, also known as "Obliquity of the Mouth and Eyes" or "Facial Nerve Palsy," refers to a disorder characterized primarily by the dysfunction of the facial expression muscle groups. Within the field of internal medicine, Bell's Palsy is categorized under "Apoplexy," with the pathogenesis attributed to the vacuity of the meridians, where wind pathogen invades the deficiency, leading to malnourishment of the facial tendons and muscles, resulting in symptoms such as obliquity of the mouth and eyes.
In clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, the core pathogenesis of Bell's Palsy is the vacuity of the meridians and the invasion of wind pathogens. Common precipitating factors include deficiency of vital energy, excessive fatigue, and emotional disharmony. During the process of differentiation, attention should be paid to distinguishing the cold, heat, deficiency, and excess:
1. Wind-Cold Invading the Channels: Characterized by sudden obliquity of the mouth and eyes, tightness of the face, aversion to wind and cold, pale tongue with thin white fur, and floating tense pulse.
2. Wind-Heat Invading the Channels: Manifested by obliquity of the mouth and eyes, facial warmth, dry throat, bitter mouth, red tongue with thin yellow fur, and floating rapid pulse.
Overall Treatment Approach: In the clinical treatment of Bell's Palsy, the main focus is on dispelling wind and cold, warming the meridians, and promoting the flow of channels. For those with wind-heat invasion, it is necessary to disperse wind and clear heat, and promote blood circulation and channel unblocking. During the treatment process, it is also essential to flexibly apply methods such as tonifying Qi and blood, and harmonizing Yin and Yang according to the specific condition of the patient.
