Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition

Lung Consumption (Tuberculosis): Lung Consumption, also known as tuberculosis in traditional Chinese medicine, falls under the category of lung-related diseases. According to textbooks such as "Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine," Lung Consumption is a chronic infectious disease characterized by clinical manifestations such as cough, hemoptysis, feverishness, and night sweats. The pathogenesis primarily involves the deficiency of lung yin, which, over time, can lead to an excess of fire due to yin deficiency, thereby affecting the functions of multiple organs such as the lung, spleen, and kidney.

In the clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, the core pathogenesis of Lung Consumption is the deficiency of lung yin. Common precipitating factors include prolonged illness and exhaustion, irregular diet, and emotional disharmony. During the differentiation of symptoms, attention should be paid to distinguishing the properties of cold and heat, and the虚实, with key points including:

1. Lung Yin Deficiency Syndrome: Manifested by dry cough with little phlegm, short, rapid coughing, blood-tinged sputum, dry mouth and throat. Patients of this type often suffer from insufficient lung yin, which fails to moisten the lung and relieve cough.
2. Yin Deficiency with Excess of Fire Syndrome: Manifested by coughing with shortness of breath, scanty, sticky sputum, recurrent hemoptysis, feverishness, and night sweats. Patients of this type often suffer from lung yin deficiency, fire excess that injures the collaterals, and uncontrolled blood flow.

Overall Treatment Approach: In the clinical management of Lung Consumption, traditional Chinese medicine adheres to the principles of nourishing yin and moistening the lung, eliminating worms, and relieving cough. Depending on the varying conditions, flexible application of methods such as nourishing yin to subdue fire and moistening the lung to relieve cough is employed. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that the treatment of Lung Consumption requires comprehensive adjustment, emphasizing dietary nourishment, strengthening the constitution, and, at the same time,配合 appropriate medication.
