Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition

Frostbite, a type of external disease in traditional Chinese medicine, also known as "frost injury." According to "Internal Medicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine": "Frostbite is caused by the invasion of cold pathogen into the skin, leading to blood stasis. It is characterized by redness, swelling, itching, and pain in exposed areas such as hands, feet, ears, nose, and face, which may even lead to ulceration."

In clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, the core pathogenesis of frostbite is the invasion of cold pathogen and blood stasis. Common triggers include cold weather, prolonged residence in damp environments, and wearing thin clothing. During differentiation, attention should be paid to distinguishing the nature of cold, heat, deficiency, and excess. For instance, the blood stasis due to cold manifestation is characterized by red, itchy, and painful hands and feet, which worsen in cold conditions and become itchy when exposed to heat; while the yang deficiency and cold congealment manifestation is characterized by recurrent episodes, cold hands and feet, and pale complexion. The overall direction of treatment suggests that in clinical practice, the treatment of frostbite often involves methods such as warming the meridians and dispelling cold, promoting blood circulation and removing obstruction, or warming the yang and dispelling cold, and promoting blood circulation and alleviating pain. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that by adjusting the balance of yin and yang in the body, and enhancing the body's resistance to cold, the purpose of prevention and treatment of frostbite can be achieved.
