Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition
Mumps, also known as epidemic parotitis, falls under the category of "Wenbing" (Warm Disease) in traditional Chinese medicine. According to the records in "Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine," mumps is caused by the invasion of "Wen毒" (Warm Toxin) into the Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, leading to its stagnation in the parotid glands. The clinical manifestations include swelling and pain in the parotid area below one or both ears, accompanied by symptoms such as fever and aversion to cold.
In the clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, the core pathogenesis of mumps is the invasion of "Wen毒" and the stagnation in the Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. Common triggers include exposure to wind-heat toxins, particularly during spring and winter. During the differential diagnosis, attention should be paid to the following key points:
1. Cold and Heat, Deficiency and Excess: The common syndrome is mainly characterized by "Wen毒" on the surface, presenting with fever, aversion to cold, and general swelling and pain in the parotid area; while the variant syndrome involves the invasion of the heart and liver by the pathogen, leading to symptoms such as persistent high fever, confusion, and convulsions.
2. Limb Symptoms: The common syndrome may present with headache and sore throat, while the variant syndrome may involve symptoms such as numbness and convulsions in the limbs.
3. Tongue and Pulse: The common syndrome is characterized by a red tongue with thin yellow fur and floating rapid pulse; while the variant syndrome is marked by a red and绛 (deep red) tongue with yellow greasy fur and a rapid and strong pulse.
Overall Treatment Direction: In clinical practice, the common syndrome is treated with methods of dispersing wind and clearing heat, and dissipating swelling; while the variant syndrome is treated with methods of clearing heat and detoxifying, and calming the wind and opening the orifices. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that through differential diagnosis and treatment, symptoms can be alleviated and recovery can be promoted.
Common Syndrome Types and Key Points of Differentiation

Management Approach:清热解毒,息风开窍
The above syndrome information is based on traditional Chinese medicine textbooks and clinical standards. Specific differentiation should be completed by a practicing traditional Chinese medicine physician in person.
Physician's Clinical Insights
In the treatment of mumps patients, the focus is on clearing heat and detoxifying, with an emphasis on restoring the function of the parotid glands.
