Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition
In traditional Chinese medicine, "Luo Ge" (also known as "throat蛾") refers to a common disease in the department of otorhinolaryngology. According to the "Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine," Luo Ge is primarily characterized by the redness, swelling, heat, and pain of the tonsils (the tonsillar nuclei), often accompanied by symptoms such as fever and aversion to wind. The etiology is usually attributed to external wind-heat invasion, or internal factors such as improper diet, emotional disharmony, and other factors that lead to excessive heat in the lungs and stomach, ascending to the throat and causing inflammation.
In clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, the core pathogenesis of Luo Ge is the excessive heat in the lungs and stomach, with the heat toxin ascending to the throat. Common precipitating factors include irregular diet, overexertion, and invasion by wind-heat pathogens. During differentiation of symptoms, attention should be paid to distinguishing between cold and heat, as well as deficiency and excess. Key points include:
1. Wind-heat combat syndrome: Pain in the throat, red and swollen tonsils, fever, and aversion to wind. This type requires the treatment of dispelling wind and clearing heat, and promoting the throat's swelling reduction.
2. Excessive heat in the lungs and stomach: Severe throat pain, red and swollen tonsils with pus formation, high fever, and thirst. This type requires clearing heat and detoxifying, and promoting throat swelling reduction.
In treatment, traditional Chinese medicine often employs internal medication and external treatments, such as dispelling wind and clearing heat, and detoxifying, to harmonize the Yin and Yang and achieve therapeutic goals. It is important to note that the adjustment for Luo Ge should focus on clearing heat and detoxifying, promoting throat swelling reduction, and targeted treatment based on specific patterns.

Physician's Clinical Insights
For practitioners, the pain in the throat of patients with Luo Ge, observed along with the degree of redness and swelling and the pulse being wiry and tight, can help differentiate between excess and deficiency syndromes.
