Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition
Sore Eye (Sand Eye) is an ophthalmic disease in traditional Chinese medicine, categorized under external eye disorders. According to the classical text "Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine," sore eye is caused by the invasion of sand and dust into the eyes, leading to the accumulation of wind, heat, and dampness. Symptoms include itching, foreign body sensation, and sticky secretions. The primary manifestation of sore eye is inflammation of the eyelids and conjunctiva, with the pathogenesis often related to wind, heat, and dampness.
In clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, the core pathogenesis of sore eye is the accumulation of wind, heat, and dampness in the eyes, leading to obstructed circulation of Qi and blood locally. Common triggers include wind and sand invasion, eye fatigue, and irregular diet. During the process of differentiation, attention should be paid to the following key points:
1. Wind-heat syndrome: Characterized by eye itching, foreign body sensation, and sticky secretions, which may be accompanied by slight eye redness and dryness.
2. Damp-heat syndrome: Characterized by eyelid follicle hyperplasia, excessive secretions, and sticky eyes, which may be accompanied by eyelid swelling and yellowish eye secretions.
Overall treatment direction: In clinical practice, the treatment of sore eye focuses on dispelling wind and heat, and clearing away turbidity to improve vision. According to different patterns, corresponding treatment methods can be adopted, such as dispelling wind and clearing heat for wind-heat syndrome, and clearing heat and draining dampness for damp-heat syndrome. During the treatment process, it is also necessary to ensure adequate rest, avoid overexertion, maintain eye hygiene, and avoid adverse stimuli such as wind and sand. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the treatment of sore eye requires comprehensive treatment, including internal herbal medicine, external medication, and appropriate daily care.
