Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition
Pulmonary Flaccidity (Pulmonary Fibrosis)
In traditional Chinese medicine, pulmonary flaccidity, also known as pulmonary fibrosis, falls under the category of lung-related diseases. The classical text "Jin Gui Yao Lue" (Essentials from the Golden Cabinet) describes it as: "Pulmonary flaccidity is characterized by coughing up sputum and saliva, and shortness of breath that is insufficient to sustain respiration." This condition is primarily caused by weakened lung Qi, depletion of body fluid, and the failure of the lung to be nourished, manifesting as symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, and excessive phlegm.
In clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, pulmonary flaccidity is primarily characterized by weakened lung Qi, depletion of body fluid, and the failure of the lung to be nourished. Common precipitating factors include prolonged coughing that injures the lung, excessive physical and sexual activity, and external invasion of the six pathogenic factors. During differentiation of symptoms, attention should be paid to distinguishing cold, heat, deficiency, and excess:
1. Deficient Heat Syndrome: Manifested by coughing up thick, sticky sputum and saliva, with a weak cough and rapid, shortness of breath. The therapeutic approach is to nourish Yin and clear heat, and moisten the lung and generate body fluid.
2. Deficient Cold Syndrome: Manifested by coughing up thin, copious saliva, without thirst, and feeling cold with shortness of breath. The therapeutic approach is to warm the lung and invigorate Qi, and nourish Yin to moisten dryness.
Overall Therapeutic Direction: In the clinical treatment of pulmonary flaccidity, traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes the harmonization of lung Qi and body fluid. The specific treatment methods are tailored to the particular syndrome type to restore normal lung function. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that the treatment of pulmonary flaccidity should follow the principle of "treating both the root and the branch," meaning that while treating the main symptoms, attention is also given to the overall nourishment of Qi and blood in the body.
Common Syndrome Types and Key Points of Differentiation
虚热证
Main Manifestations:咳吐浊唾涎沫,质黏稠,咳声不扬,气急喘促
Management Approach:滋阴清热,润肺生津
虚寒证
Main Manifestations:咳吐涎沫,质清稀量多,口不渴,形寒气短
Management Approach:温肺益气,养阴润燥
The above syndrome information is based on traditional Chinese medicine textbooks and clinical standards. Specific differentiation should be completed by a practicing traditional Chinese medicine physician in person.
Physician's Clinical Insights
Observing pulmonary flaccidity patients often reveals symptoms such as pale lips and nails, and a pale tongue with white coating, indicating a need for reinforcing the lung and Qi to strengthen the foundation.
