Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition
In traditional Chinese medicine, "Chuanyin" (asthma) refers to a category of lung-related diseases characterized by the upward reverse flow of lung Qi, leading to rapid breathing, and in severe cases, the patient may open their mouth, lift their shoulders, and fluff their nostrils. The pathogenesis of this condition is often due to lung Qi deficiency or external pathogenic invasion, resulting in the failure of the lung to ventilate and descend. According to the "Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine," Chuanyin can be classified into various patterns such as wind-cold obstructing the lung, phlegm-heat stifling the lung, and lung Qi deficiency.
In clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, the core pathogenesis of Chuanyin is the upward reverse flow of lung Qi. Common triggers include external pathogenic invasion, improper diet, and emotional disharmony. During differentiation, it is crucial to distinguish between cold and heat, deficiency and excess, such as wind-cold obstructing the lung, which presents with asthma, coughing, profuse thin, whitish sputum, aversion to cold, and no sweating; phlegm-heat stifling the lung, characterized by asthma, coughing, rapid breathing, yellow, sticky sputum, fever, and thirst; and lung Qi deficiency, which manifests as shortness of breath, weak cough, spontaneous sweating, and aversion to wind. The overall approach to treatment suggests that different patterns should be treated with methods such as dispersing cold from the lung, clearing heat and resolving phlegm, and replenishing lung Qi. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the prevention and treatment of Chuanyin should focus on nourishing lung Qi, strengthening the physique, and avoiding external pathogenic invasion.

Physician's Clinical Insights
The physician's insight is that in treating Chuanyin patients, asthma should be differentiated based on deficiency and excess, cold and heat, while also considering the interdependence of Qi deficiency and blood stasis.
