Traditional Chinese Medicine Definition
Gouty Arthritis (Gout): Gouty arthritis, known as Gout in traditional Chinese medicine, falls under the category of bone injury and disease conditions. According to the records in "Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine," gouty arthritis is caused by the accumulation of dampness-heat and phlegm-blood stasis, primarily manifested as joint redness, swelling, heat, and pain, which recurs frequently and may even lead to joint deformity. The pathogenesis is rooted in the deficiency of the liver and kidney, with dampness-heat and phlegm-blood stasis as the superficial manifestation.
In clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicine, the core pathogenesis of gouty arthritis is the deficiency of the liver and kidney, with dampness-heat and phlegm-blood stasis obstructing the joints. Common precipitating factors include irregular diet, emotional disturbances, and imbalance of work and rest. During differentiation, attention should be paid to distinguishing the nature of cold and heat, as well as the deficiency and excess, with key points including:
1. Dampness-heat accumulation syndrome: Sudden joint redness and severe pain, accompanied by dry mouth and constipation, a red tongue with yellow greasy coating, and a slippery and rapid pulse.
2. Phlegm-blood stasis obstruction syndrome: Joint swelling and deformity, with piercing pain, nodules, a purple tongue with ecchymosis, and a涩脉 (stagnant pulse).
Overall Treatment Approach: In the clinical treatment of gouty arthritis, the principle is to clear heat and promote diuresis, resolve phlegm and remove blood stasis, and relieve pain by dredging the meridians. By adjusting the functions of the liver and kidney, eliminating dampness-heat and phlegm-blood stasis, the goal is to alleviate symptoms and prevent recurrence. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the treatment of gouty arthritis should be tailored to individual differences and flexibly utilize comprehensive therapies such as internal herbal medicine, external application, and acupuncture.

Physician's Clinical Insights
In clinical practice, many gout patients present with internal dampness-heat, and clearing heat and promoting diuresis is crucial. Abstaining from certain foods is also of great importance.
